Program Overview

Introduction to Using NVivo for Qualitative Data Analysis & Management

Course Overview

The Introduction to Using NVivo for Qualitative Data Analysis & Management course is designed for researchers from all disciplines who are interested in using NVivo software for managing and analyzing qualitative data. This hands-on course is most effective when working on your own data during the session.

Course Details

  • Date: 21 to 22 October 2025 (Wednesday to Thursday)
  • Venue: UCT Faculty of Health Sciences (Computer Lab)
  • Time: 09h00 to 16h00
  • Course Fee: R 3 000 per person (UCT staff/students are eligible for a discounted rate)

Target Audience

This course is intended for researchers who:

  • Are working with qualitative data (interviews, focus groups, field notes, documents, visual and audio data)
  • Have no or little experience with NVivo, but are interested in using it for research they are currently conducting
  • Preferably have a background in or some experience in qualitative research methodology
  • Want to use NVivo for managing and analyzing their data (following general qualitative principles of thematic analysis or other similar approaches)

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will have learned and practiced:

Theory (Qualitative Data Analysis Theory)

  • Understanding of the basic theoretical foundations for qualitative data analysis (QDA) and of the range of analytic strategies frequently used in QDA
  • Understanding and ability to implement strategies to improve rigor in qualitative data analysis, particularly those relevant to the use of software in analysis

Importing (Setting-up an NVivo Project)

  • Ability to import, categorize, and manage data in the software (including PDFs, word documents, pictures, video or audio files) for different aspects of the research process, including coding of transcripts and literature reviews

Organizing (Using Basic Analysis Features of NVivo)

  • Ability to analyze an interview transcript through coding (i.e., create codes, organize codes, code text using text, audio, and auto-coding methods)
  • Ability to create and organize annotations and memos (including linking to files)
  • Ability to create and use case classifications and attributes

Exploring (Explore Text Using Basic Features of NVivo)

  • Knowledge of how to explore interview text using word frequency and text search
  • Basic understanding of how to illustrate with visualizations (i.e., mind maps, project maps)

Software Overview

NVivo does not analyze qualitative data for the researcher but rather can enhance the researcher's analytical capacity by providing the means to efficiently store, sort, and look for patterns in diverse forms of data. Training in NVivo is not a substitute for qualitative research training.

Certificate of Attendance

A digital certificate of attendance will be issued to participants of the course.
