Program Overview
Introduction to SEAmester
SEAmester is a 10-day postgraduate-level research and training voyage that takes place aboard the SA Agulhas II as part of the annual Agulhas current scientific survey. This program provides a uniquely immersive experience, preparing students for advanced marine careers while nurturing collaboration, diversity, and real scientific impact.
Program Structure
- The program is divided into two science streams:
- 'Tools of The Trade'
- 'Oceans in a Changing Climate'
- Students also have the opportunity to choose electives from the Art Stream, which includes:
- Science Education
- Seascapes
- Mosaics
- Science Communication through Photography & Video making
- The schedule includes evening lectures, ship tours, a SEAmester themed party, and a fancy art exhibition to showcase the students' artwork at the end of the cruise.
Research Areas
- The SA Agulhas II is a national polar research and supply vessel that accommodates 100 students, scientists, and lecturers, as well as 40 crew members.
- The vessel's major annual research and supply missions include:
- Antarctica (SANAE IV base)
- Gough & Marion Islands
- Physical, chemical, and biological oceanography
- Meteorology
- Climate science
- Marine geology
Participant Feedback
- Several MARiS ECRs were accepted to join the SEAmester program as students, lecturers, and assistants, and the Coast to Current scientific team.
- Participants shared their thoughts on the experience, highlighting the opportunity to learn from brilliant minds and passionate scientists in the field of marine sciences.
- The experience provided valuable insights into the application of technical skills in the marine field and the importance of research in understanding the complexity of the region.
SEAmester Experience
- The program includes a range of activities, such as:
- Lectures and practicals
- Deck work and practical demonstrations
- Sampling the water collected from the Niskon bottles
- Interacting with lecturers and students
- Learning alongside them
- The experience also includes free time, which is spent with good people, having fun, and forming new connections.
Career Opportunities
- SEAmester is an incredible opportunity for students, lecturers, and the scientific team to explore key areas of the polar research vessel and gain insights into the vessel's involvement in marine and polar research expeditions.
- Exposure to national infrastructure like the SA Agulhas II plays a pivotal role in sparking curiosity and inspiring future careers in ocean science, marine engineering, and maritime studies.
