Introduction to the MBChB Program
The MBChB program is a 6-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree offered by the University of Cape Town's Faculty of Health Sciences.
Program Overview
The MBChB programme takes six years to complete. As a medical doctor, one may work in a public or private hospital, in a community clinic, join a doctor's practice, or open their own practice. There are also opportunities in non-clinical settings where one can work for corporations and innovate new technologies and/or do sales, training, and research.
Admission Requirements
- A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 60% in Mathematics, 60% in Physical Sciences, and 50% in English Home Language or 60% in English First Additional Language.
- National Benchmark Tests (NBTs): Applicants must write the NBTs, and performance in these tests will be considered alongside academic results.
- Additional Considerations: The Faculty may also consider factors such as leadership qualities, extracurricular activities, and community engagement.
Career Opportunities
After graduating with an MBChB and completing two years' internship and a year's community service, one will be allowed by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) to practise as a medical doctor independently.

The program is offered by the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences, with the Faculty Office located in the Barnard Fuller Building, Anzio Road, Observatory, Cape Town.
