Program Overview
Introduction to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a teaching qualification offered by the University of Cape Town. To study for the PGCE, students must first complete a bachelor's degree, which typically takes three to four years. The PGCE is a one-year full-time program that is not offered through distance learning or correspondence studies.
PGCE Entry Requirements
There are two PGCE programs available: Senior Phase-FET and FET. The PGCE Foundation and Intermediate Phases are not offered. Additionally, the PGCE English FET-Only and Geography FET-Only methods subjects will not be offered in 2026, but History FET-Only will continue to be available.
Steps to Becoming a Teacher at UCT
To become a teacher at UCT, students must follow these steps:
- Decide which phase they would like to teach.
- Choose an appropriate degree, such as a B.A. for teaching SP-FET English and History, or a B.Sc for teaching SP Natural Science and FET Life Science.
- Contact the relevant faculty office for general advice about degree programs.
- Apply to UCT to study the chosen degree.
- Apply online for the PGCE in the final year of undergraduate study.
- Applications are considered in order of receipt, and admission to the PGCE will be closed when available places have been filled.
Teaching in a High School
To teach in a high school, students must meet specific requirements:
- Their bachelor's degree must include at least two subjects, studied to at least second-year level, from the following list: languages, mathematics, environmental and geographical sciences, historical studies, life sciences, chemistry, physics, accounting, economics, music, fine art, dance, drama, or computer science.
- FET-only students take one method subject, such as History, Mathematics, Visual Arts and Design Studies, Dance Studies, or Dramatics Arts.
- Conversational Xhosa is required for the award of PGCE, so an introductory Xhosa course is strongly recommended as part of the undergraduate degree.
PGCE Admissions Criteria
Admission to the PGCE is based on academic performance, and students must meet minimum admission requirements. The minimum average results required for entry to specific teaching methods courses are:
- 55% for Physical Sciences SP & FET, Economics SP & FET, Accounting SP & FET, Xhosa SP & FET, and Afrikaans SP & FET.
- 57% for Mathematics SP & FET and Mathematics SP and Mathematics Literacy.
- 60% for Geography SP & FET, Life Sciences FET, Natural Sciences SP, and Life Skills.
- 65% for History SP & FET and English SP & FET.
