Program Overview
Introduction to the Future Global Leadership Program
The Future Global Leadership (FGL) program at Tohoku University offers three outstanding undergraduate degree courses taught in English: Advanced Molecular Chemistry (AMC), International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (IMAC-U), and Applied Marine Biology (AMB). These courses provide curriculums that help students build a solid foundation in the fundamentals of their chosen fields and encounter the latest cutting-edge research.
Curriculum
The curriculum for each course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in their chosen field. The courses are as follows:
- Advanced Molecular Chemistry (AMC)
- International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (IMAC-U)
- Applied Marine Biology (AMB)
Each course has its own syllabus, timetable, and academic staff members. The syllabus and timetable for each course can be downloaded from the university's website.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the FGL program, applicants must fulfill the following basic qualifications:
- Their nationality is, in principle, other than Japanese.
- The total amount of education they received in a school conforming to the Japanese educational system, whether in Japan or overseas, is six years or less.
- They must meet one of the following conditions:
- They have completed a 12-year curriculum of school education outside Japan, or have an equivalent education as specified by the Minister of Education of Japan.
- They have a qualification such as IB, GCE A-Levels, Abitur, etc.
- Their academic abilities are judged to be equal or superior to those of a high school graduate upon individual screening of qualifications by Tohoku University, and they are at least 18 years old.
Academic Requirements
Applicants must meet the following academic requirements:
- Standardized examination scores: AMC and IMAC-U require Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, while AMB requires Mathematics, plus two among Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.
- Official English test score: TOEFL iBT (including Home Edition) 79+, or IELTS Academic (including IELTS Online) 6.0+.
Fees/Support
The fees for the FGL program are as follows:
- Application fee: JPY 5,000
- Entrance fee: JPY 282,000
- Tuition fees: JPY 267,900 per semester
Tohoku University actively supports the academic life of international students in the FGL courses by providing scholarships to those with exceptional academic abilities.
Housing
Tohoku University will provide rooms at the University House Aobayama dormitory to all FGL students for the first two years. From the third year, students will need to live in private apartments.

FGL Community
The FGL community is voluntarily initiated by current FGL students for all current students, alumni, and academic and administrative staff. The goal of the FGL Community is to connect people in the community and share information with each other.
