Introduction to Tohoku University Gateway College
Tohoku University's tradition of "Research First", philosophy of "Open Door", and ethos of "Practice-Oriented Research and Education" have produced excellent graduates, generated numerous research achievements, and contributed to the development of a peaceful and just society.
Principles and Tradition
Over more than a century of history, Tohoku University has established itself as a leading institution. Key milestones include:
- 1907: Foundation of Tohoku University as the third national university
- 1913: Japan's first female university students
- 1922: Albert Einstein visited Tohoku University, stating "Sendai is a city most suited for research"
Leading the Way
Tohoku University became Japan's first "University for International Research Excellence" in November 2024, recognizing its strength in research capabilities. The university has also been ranked Number One in Japan for the fifth consecutive time in THE Japan University Rankings from 2020 to 2025.
International Degree Programs
Tohoku University offers international degree programs in English, providing students with the opportunity to study with peers from around the world. The university offers 3 undergraduate and about 60 graduate programs through which students can earn a degree in English.
Gateway College
Gateway College will expand upon the experience gained from Tohoku University's ongoing Future Global Leadership (FGL) program. The college is based on new principles, including early immersion, early inquiry, and specializing curiosity.

Curriculum
The curriculum offers a broad exposure to various academic fields while deepening learning in respective specialized areas, enabling flexible career choices. Students will learn alongside Japanese students and students from all over the world through group study and project-based classes.
Educational and Research Environment
Tohoku University has 10 faculties and 15 graduate schools, offering education that takes full advantage of being a comprehensive university. The university is home to advanced facilities, including the "Nano Terrace".
Activity/Facility
Unique activities, such as Suzume Odori, or "sparrow dance", are characteristic of the collaborative learning environment. The university also has a robust support system for international students, including a large international dormitory.
