Program Overview
Introduction to the International Foundation Programme
The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is a full-time, one-year university preparation course designed to prepare international students for degree-level study within the University of Edinburgh.
Programme Structure and Content
The International Foundation Programme is comprised of themed courses designed to help students prepare for undergraduate degree-level study. The programme offers three pathways to choose from:
- IFP Humanities & Social Sciences
- IFP Art & Design
- IFP Biological, Chemical, Biomedical & Environmental Sciences (BCBES)
Progression to Degree Level Study
Successful completion of the International Foundation Programme prepares students for success into an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Edinburgh.
Programme Dates
It is essential that all students are available to participate in the Welcome and Orientation period in early September.

Programme Pathways
The International Foundation Programme offers three pathways:
- IFP Humanities & Social Sciences: For those who would like to progress onto a degree within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
- IFP Art & Design: For those who would like to progress onto a degree within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
- IFP Biological, Chemical, Biomedical & Environmental Sciences (BCBES): For those who would like to progress onto a degree within the sciences, either at the College of Science and Engineering or the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine.
Support for Students
The programme provides various support options for students, including academic and personal support. Students also have access to all the same social, cultural, sporting, and support opportunities as the University's undergraduate students.
