Program Overview

International Foundation Programme

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is a university program designed to prepare students for degree-level study.

Structure and Content

The IFP is structured into two teaching blocks, each with a set of courses designed to provide students with a solid foundation in their chosen subject area.

Teaching Block 1 | Sept - Dec

In Teaching Block 1, students on the Art and Design Pathway will take the following courses:

  • Foundation Humanities & Social Sciences for Art & Design: This course introduces students to the distinct approaches of history, sociology, psychology, and cultural studies, and how each subject uses sources to better understand a particular context or topic.
  • Foundations in Art & Design Practices: This course helps students develop a broad set of research, reflective, and practical skills through workshops, group critiques, directed and personal projects, and an online learning journal.
  • Foundation English and Academic Language & Literacies (FEALL) 1: This course introduces students to academic English, referencing skills, writing structure and organization, and critical and analytical thinking. There are two levels:
    • Entry: For students who haven't met the English language requirements for their chosen degree program, with extra in-class hours each week.
    • Plus: For students who have met the English language requirements, with an additional modern language course.

Teaching Block 2 | Jan - May

In Teaching Block 2, students will take the following courses:

  • Foundation English and Academic Language & Literacies (FEALL) 2: This course builds on the skills developed in Teaching Block 1, with students completing an independent research project.
  • Ideas and Concepts in Art & Design Practices: This course builds on Foundations in Art & Design Practices, with students exploring lines of enquiry, developing research skills, and creating their own projects.
  • Students will also choose one of the following courses:
    • Critical Thinking: Introduces the analysis of different kinds of arguments and encourages students to reflect on beliefs and practices.
    • Studying Society: Examines how to study research topics in the social sciences using appropriate theories and methods.
    • Analysing Text and Material Culture: Introduces students to the analysis of cultural artefacts such as films, artworks, stories, and poems.
    • Mathematics, Statistics & Data Analysis for Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: Builds on existing mathematics skills and introduces data and statistical analysis, with a focus on exploring, visualizing, and analyzing data to understand the world through quantitative methods.
