Gym Instructor (Level 2) Program
The Gym Instructor (Level 2) program is designed for individuals who wish to work as a Gym Instructor in the health and fitness industry. This program meets industry requirements to become a Gym Instructor, as set out within the CIMSPA professional standard.
Program Overview
Upon completion of this program, participants will qualify with a YMCA L2 Diploma in Exercise and Fitness: Gym Instructor. This program is ideal for those seeking a career change, wishing to add to their curriculum vitae (CV), or looking to progress towards becoming a personal trainer.
Program Content
The program covers underpinning knowledge and skills for exercise and fitness instructors, including:
- Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology for exercise and fitness professionals
- Providing a positive customer experience to exercise and fitness participants
- Principles of physical activity, exercise, and training approaches to develop fitness and health
- Health screening, risk stratification and scope of practice
- Health awareness and lifestyle management
Additionally, the program covers knowledge and skills related to supporting clients in a gym environment, including:
- Consultation, assessment and induction processes in a gym-based environment
- Maintaining safety and hygiene in the gym-based environment
- Using client information to plan gym-based exercise
- Principles for planning and designing gym-based exercise for a range of clients
- Delivering gym-based exercise sessions
- Reviewing sessions and reflecting on practice
Program Format and Assessment
The program is tutor-led and delivered over four full days (9am to 5pm). Assessments include:
- Questions and answers
- Worksheets
- Information resources
- Applied case studies
- Exercise induction portfolio
- Session planning documents
- Observation of practical skills
- Evaluation documents
The summative Practical Gym instructing assessment takes place at the end of the course.

The program prices are as follows:
- Students: £450
- Non-students: £565

The program is held at the Easter Bush Gym, Charnock Bradley Building, Easter Bush Campus, EH25 9RG.
Program Dates
Course dates are to be announced. Candidates are required to be available for both their assessment and their partner's assessment, which will take approximately 2.5 hours.
