Program Overview

Introduction to the Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)

The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is a teaching qualification offered by the Moray House School of Education and Sport at the University of Edinburgh. This program is designed for individuals who wish to become teachers in Scotland and is recognized around the world.

Programme Overview

The PGDE program lasts 36 weeks (9 months) and includes both on-campus learning and professional placement in schools in Scotland. Students spend 18 weeks learning on campus and 18 weeks on professional placement.

On-Campus Learning

On-campus learning includes lectures, workshops, and some online sessions. The program focuses on values-driven teaching, with an emphasis on sustainability and social justice.

Required Courses

All PGDE students must take required courses, which vary depending on whether they are pursuing a Primary or Secondary teaching qualification.

  • PGDE Primary:
    • Professional Placement in schools - Three blocks of around six weeks each.
    • Dimensions of Teaching - Students develop critical awareness of social justice issues in Scottish education and practice.
    • Making and Conceptualising Curriculum - This course helps students understand why and how educators build the curriculum.
    • Developing Pedagogies - Students develop an informed understanding of pedagogy, with a specific focus on pedagogy through cultural, political, and philosophical lenses.
  • PGDE Secondary:
    • Placement in schools - Three blocks of around six weeks each.
    • Curriculum and Pedagogy - To develop critically informed and confident subject teachers.
    • Professional Studies - This course provides student teachers with opportunities to critically engage with wider policy and educational research.
    • Curriculum Plus course - Options vary depending on the subject area (e.g., Expressive Arts, Physical Education, Science-related degrees).

Professional Placement

As part of the program, students spend around half of their time on professional placement in Scottish schools. This allows them to gain real-world experience as teachers, working with experienced teachers to plan, manage, organize, assess, and evaluate pupils' learning.

Accreditation with the General Teaching Council for Scotland

The teaching qualification from the University of Edinburgh is recognized by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Graduates are eligible for provisional registration and can apply for full registration after completing a satisfactory probationary year of teaching.

Teacher Induction Scheme and Flexible Route

Graduates can join the Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) for a guaranteed, paid, one-year probationary post or choose the Flexible Route, which allows for more flexibility in completing the probationary year but requires finding their own employment.

Career-Long Professional Learning

PGDE graduates can apply the masters-level credits they earned towards the MEd Leadership and Learning masters degree, enhancing their professional learning, inquiry, and research.

Our Students

Former PGDE students share their experiences and the impact of the program on their teaching careers, highlighting the supportive community and the preparation they received for their roles as educators.
