Program Overview


Master's Programme in Public Health Sciences

The Master's Programme in Public Health Sciences is a two-year, full-time programme that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of public health concepts, methods, and interventions. The programme has two specialisations: Public Health Epidemiology and Health Promotion and Prevention.

About the Programme

The programme allows students to develop a scientific approach and gain a solid theoretical understanding of Public Health Sciences, with a focus on their chosen specialisation. Both tracks include advanced studies in epidemiology and biostatistics, as well as methods for outcome evaluation of interventions. Common courses cover concepts and theories in Public Health Sciences, qualitative approaches, and project management.


Public Health Epidemiology Track

With its focus on applied epidemiology, this track gives students the tools they need to describe, analyse, and reflect upon various public health issues and to critically review epidemiological studies.


Health Promotion and Prevention Track

In this track, students focus on applied methods for health promotion and disease prevention action, developing skills to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate health interventions at both individual and structural levels.


Programme Structure

The programme is built around joint courses equivalent to one year of studies, providing an introduction to the main subject of public health, including concepts, principles, and methods in public health work and research. Ethics is introduced in the first course and further deepened by relevant ethical perspectives and considerations brought up during respective courses.

Specific Eligibility Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree or a professional degree equivalent to a Swedish Bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits in public health science, healthcare, or other relevant social sciences subject area.
  • Proficiency in English equivalent to English B/English 6.

Selection

The selection is based on an overall assessment of the applicant's qualifications, such as previous education, relevant work and/or research experience, and statement of intent.


Fees

  • Application fee: 900 SEK
  • Tuition fee: Total amount 360,000 SEK, with the first instalment being 90,000 SEK.

Graduates are well-prepared for a variety of career opportunities in the private and public sectors, particularly within authorities responsible for public health, both in Sweden and abroad. The programme also provides a solid foundation for further study at the doctoral level (PhD).


Outcomes

Upon completion of the programme, students will have advanced knowledge and understanding of public health concepts and methods for analysis and interpretation of the distribution of health and its determinants. They will also demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate how public health problems should be prioritized, as well as to plan and implement preventive strategies.
