Program Overview
Introduction to the Medical Program
The Medical Program at Karolinska Institutet is a 5.5-year program that provides students with a comprehensive education in medicine. The program is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become competent physicians.
Program Organization
The program is organized into several committees and councils, each with its own specific responsibilities. These include:
- Programnämnden (Program Board): The Program Board is responsible for the overall management and coordination of the program. It is composed of:
- Ordförande (Chair)
- Programdirektor för läkarprogrammet (Program Director for the Medical Program)
- Programdirektor för implementering (Program Director for Implementation)
- Four teacher representatives
- Three student representatives
- One representative from Region Stockholm
- Programkommittén (Program Committee): The Program Committee is responsible for issues related to coordination, quality development, and operations. It is composed of:
- Terminskollegieordförande (Term College Chair)
- Temaordförande (Theme Chair)
- Strimmaordföranden (Stream Chair)
- Two student representatives
- Programdirektor för implementering (Program Director for Implementation)
- Two assistant program directors
- Administrator
- Tema- och strimmakollegier (Theme and Stream Colleges): These colleges are responsible for the detailed planning of each theme and stream, as well as coordination between course providers and reporting to the Program Board.
Theme Colleges
There are seven theme colleges (Tema 1-7) that handle the detailed planning of each theme, coordination between course providers, and reporting to the Program Board. Each theme college is composed of:
- Kursansvariga (Course Responsible)
- Momentansvariga lärare (Moment Responsible Teachers)
- Studentrepresentanter (Student Representatives)
Stream Colleges
The stream colleges are responsible for the planning and coordination of the streams. There are three stream colleges:
- VetU-kollegiet (VetU College): Handles the scientific development aspects of the program.
- PU-kollegiet (PU College): Handles the professional development aspects of the program.
- PV-kollegiet (PV College): Handles the primary care aspects of the program.
Committee for Student-Selected Courses
The Committee for Student-Selected Courses is responsible for handling all student-selected courses and projects during the elective periods. The committee is composed of teachers and student representatives.
International Committee
The International Committee (LINK) works with international student exchanges on the medical program. The committee is composed of teachers and students, and is responsible for:
- Establishing agreements with international partner universities
- Deciding on rules for prioritization and selection of students for exchange programs
- Ensuring that at least 50% of medical students have studied abroad for a period during their education at Karolinska Institutet
Admission Committee
The Admission Committee is responsible for issues related to alternative admission to the program. The committee is composed of teachers and student representatives, and is responsible for:
- Developing and quality-assuring alternative admission procedures
- Implementing the stepwise selection process
- Proposing merit ratings for eligible applicants
- Continuously reporting to the Program Board
Program Structure
The program is structured into several themes and streams, each with its own specific focus and content. The themes and streams are designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in medicine, and to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become competent physicians.

Assessment and Evaluation
The program uses a range of assessment and evaluation methods, including:
- Written exams
- Oral exams
- Clinical skills assessments
- Research project evaluations
- Peer assessment
Graduation and Degree
Upon completion of the program, students are awarded a medical degree (Läkarexamen). The degree is recognized by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education and is eligible for registration as a physician in Sweden.
