Special Eligibility

To be eligible for the course, students must have a passing grade in all courses from Basics of Science 1-6, Medical Diagnostics with Basic Scientific Integration, and Clinical Medicine 1 (Terms 1-5). They must also have a passing grade in at least one Clinical Placement (VFU) moment in the course Clinical Medicine 2: Internal Medicine Deepening and Broadening (Term 6).

Goals

The goal of the course is to deepen clinical competencies from Clinical Medicine 1 and 2 and broaden them with a surgical orientation. With a starting point from symptoms and findings, students are trained to diagnose, initially assess, and manage common, serious, and acute disease conditions within the areas of surgery, orthopedics, urology, anesthesiology, and intensive care, as well as necessary radiological diagnostics for these areas.

Learning Objectives

Knowledge and Understanding

For a passing grade, the student must be able to:

  • Describe and evaluate the significance of symptoms and findings in common, acute, and serious disease conditions.
  • Describe how surgical conditions are diagnosed, treated, and followed up, and their prognosis.
  • Discuss the pros and cons of surgery and other interventions in relation to pharmacological treatment and lifestyle changes from individual, societal, global, ethical, and sustainability perspectives.
  • Explain preventive measures to prevent postoperative complications and disease.
  • Identify the most common findings in radiological examinations related to surgical conditions.

Skills and Abilities

For a passing grade, the student must be able to:

  • Take a person-centered anamnesis for common, serious, and acute conditions within surgical diseases and conditions, and ensure structured information transfer within and between professions.
  • Perform an adequate status examination against the background of the current problem and risk factors, taking into account hygiene rules and the patient's integrity.
  • Prioritize and discuss relevant differential diagnoses.
  • Evaluate and prioritize medical measures within the course's subject areas.
  • Develop an initial investigation plan, choose adequate investigation including radiology, and interpret results.

Attitudes and Assessment Ability

For a passing grade, the student must be able to:

  • Reflect on the equal conditions perspective for patients within the course's subject areas.
  • Identify value conflicts in meeting patients and relatives, and handle and reason about these in open care, during the acute phase, and in intensive care.
  • Reflect on the importance of one's own values, empathy, and a professional attitude in interaction with patients, relatives, and colleagues.

Content

The course content is focused on surgical specialties. The student should deepen their ability to independent clinical work, scientific analysis of clinical issues, and medical decision-making, taking into account the patient's entire situation.
