Mĺl

The aim of the course is to introduce the subject of pharmacology by providing knowledge about drugs and their effects on organisms. Students should gain knowledge and understanding of pharmacological principles that play a central role in healthcare, the pharmaceutical industry, or research.

Kunskap och förstĺelse

Students should be able to:

  • Describe a drug's fate in the organism (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) and understand pharmacokinetic basic concepts
  • Explain drug effects at the molecular/cellular level as well as at the organ and integrative levels
  • Identify the most important therapeutic effects and side effects, as well as the main mechanisms of action for drugs in different groups
  • Understand mechanisms behind tolerance development and dependence
  • Recognize drugs and other substances that are often abused
  • Explain mechanisms for drug interactions
  • Describe mechanisms (genetic, age-related, disease-related, etc.) for individual variations in drug effects and pharmacokinetics

Innehĺll

The course is divided into three parts.

Allmän farmakologi, 3.0 hp

  • Betygsskala: GU
  • This part covers general pharmacology, including receptor pharmacology, neurotransmission, and neuropsychopharmacology. Principles for drug uptake, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and pharmacokinetic basic concepts are also covered.

Verkningsmekanismer för läkemedel, 3.0 hp

  • Betygsskala: GU
  • This part covers:
    • The most important therapeutic effects and side effects, as well as the main mechanisms of action for drugs in different groups
    • Cardiovascular pharmacology (drugs for heart failure, drugs for ischemic heart disease, blood pressure-lowering drugs, etc.), drugs for coagulation disorders, respiratory pharmacology, gastrointestinal pharmacology, analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs, diuretics, endocrine pharmacology, antibiotics, transplantation and immunopharmacology, and cytostatics

Integrering, 9.0 hp

  • Betygsskala: VU
  • This part integrates theoretical and practical knowledge conveyed during the course.

Arbetsformer

  • Introduction and all examinations and laboratory work take place on Campus Solna
  • Teacher-led/teacher-supported resources include lectures, human laboratory work, and group exercises with problem-solving
  • Distance learning includes pre-recorded lectures, digital lectures, discussion forums with individual posts via the learning platform, practice quizzes, and peer-to-peer learning
  • A scientific approach (e.g., analytical and critical thinking about research data) is trained during human laboratory work, where reflection and discussion of results are presented in writing in the form of a laboratory report

Examination

  • Moment 1: Muntlig Dugga 1 (U/G)
  • Moment 2: Muntlig Dugga 2 (U/G)
  • Moment 3: Skriftlig tentamen (U/G/VG)
  • To pass the course (grade G or higher), a minimum of a passing grade on all course moments is required. For a grade of VG on the course, a grade of VG on moment 3 is required.

Övergĺngsbestämmelser

Examination will be available for a period of two years after a potential discontinuation of the course. Examination can take place according to the previous literature list for a period of one year after the literature list has been updated.

Övriga föreskrifter

  • Course evaluation will be conducted according to the guidelines established by the Committee for Education at the basic and advanced levels
  • Language of instruction: Swedish. Teaching and presentations in English may occur
