Objectives

The course aims to introduce the subject of disease mechanisms and develop an understanding of the underlying mechanisms and disease images of serious diseases that are of great importance for public health. The course should also stimulate a scientific approach.

  • Account for the treatment and prevention of serious diseases
  • Explain and assess the clinical picture in acute deteriorations and potentially life-threatening conditions in serious diseases

Content

The course begins with an overarching presentation of folk diseases from a global and national perspective. The content then focuses on basic pathophysiological principles such as cell damage and inflammation, in relation to somatic conditions such as tumor diseases, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and diabetes. Emphasis is placed on symptoms and signs that occur in connection with acute changes in the current disease conditions. During the course, great emphasis is also placed on the development of and ability to adopt a scientific approach by searching for and orally presenting scientific material.


Working Methods

To support learning, recorded lectures, study materials with patient cases and questions, teacher-led web-based seminars, and resource time are offered.


Examination

The course is examined through two oral exams and one written, individual exam.


Transition Provisions

Examination will be provided for a period of two years after any eventual discontinuation of the course.
