Program Overview: Complementary Education for Midwives

The Complementary Education for Midwives program is designed for midwives with a foreign degree. The program consists of two terms, with the first term focusing on theoretical courses and the second term comprising practical training, known as verksamhetsf—rlagd utbildning (VFU).

Program Structure

• The program is divided into two terms:
  • Term 1 (Spring term): Theoretical courses
  • Term 2 (Fall term): Practical training (VFU)
• After completing the program, students can apply for a Swedish midwife license.

The program includes the following courses:

• Farmakologi och lðkemedelsberðkning (4.5 hp)
• Barnmorskans profession inom svensk hðlso- och sjukvÍrd (15 hp)
• Barnmorskans profession inom gynekologi, m—drahðlsovÍrd samt antikonception (10.5 hp)
• F—rlossning 1 och m—drahðlsovÍrd (15 hp)
• F—rlossning 2, antenatal vÍrd samt eftervÍrd (15 hp)

Term 1 - Spring Term

• Barnmorskans profession inom svensk hðlso- och sjukvÍrd (15 hp)
• Barnmorskans profession inom gynekologi, m—drahðlsovÍrd samt antikonception (10.5 hp)
• Farmakologi och lðkemedelsberðkning (4.5 hp)

Term 2 - Fall Term

• F—rlossning 1 och m—drahðlsovÍrd (15 hp)
• F—rlossning 2, antenatal vÍrd samt eftervÍrd (15 hp)

Participating Institutions

The program is offered by the Department of Women's and Children's Health. The course "Farmakologi och lðkemedelsberðkning" (4.5 hp) is given by the Department of Laboratory Medicine, while other courses are given by the Department of Women's and Children's Health.

Previous Term Start

The program starts one week before the regular term start at Karolinska Institutet. The fall term of 2025 starts on August 25 and ends on January 18, with a break during week 52.

Education Plan

The current education plan (7KB18) is valid for students who started the program before 2025. A new education plan, which includes three terms, will be introduced in 2027. Students who are currently enrolled in the program and have not completed all courses should contact the institution for more information.

A new program with a new education plan, which includes three terms, will start in 2027. Information about the new program will be available in 2026.
