Special Eligibility

  • Additionally, requires Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 with a passing grade.

Objectives

The overall objective of the course is for the student to achieve in-depth knowledge and understanding of the importance of support during childbirth, as well as an in-depth ability to provide such support.


After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:


  • Analyze and reflect on theories and concepts relevant to support during childbirth
  • Explain and reflect on the state of evidence regarding continuous support
  • Analyze and reflect on the supportive roles of the midwife, partner, and other individuals
  • Identify and meet individual support needs of women who are fearful of childbirth, have been subjected to abuse, and are mentally fragile during pregnancy and childbirth
  • Analyze and reflect on factors that influence the childbirth experience
  • Account for and apply methods and tools for support during childbirth
  • Analyze and reflect on personal strengths and limitations related to providing security-enhancing support
  • Analyze and reflect on organizational, historical, cultural, social, and ethical aspects of support during childbirth

Content

Analysis, reflection, and application of concepts, theories, methods, and tools relevant to support during childbirth. Review of the state of evidence for continuous support. Organizational, historical, cultural, social, and ethical aspects of support during childbirth, as well as support needs of particularly vulnerable groups.


Teaching Methods

The teaching is based on a problem-oriented and collaborative approach to learning, where the teaching methods provide opportunities for the student to take active responsibility for their learning. The teaching methods used are lectures and seminars. Seminars are compulsory. The course uses a web-based learning platform for information and communication.


Examination

Examination takes place in the form of seminars and individual assignments.


Transition Provisions

Examination will be provided for a period of two years after any potential discontinuation of the course. Examination can take place according to the previous literature list for a period of one year after the literature list has been updated.


Other Provisions

Course evaluation is carried out according to guidelines established by the Committee for Education at the basic and advanced levels (KU) at Karolinska Institutet. Teaching is conducted in Swedish. Teaching in English may occur. The course may not be credited in an examination simultaneously with a completed and passed course whose content entirely or partially coincides with the content of the course.
