Mĺl

Objectives

The course aims to deepen students' knowledge of the care of acutely ill children and women before, during, and after childbirth. The knowledge is level-divided according to the SOLO taxonomy (S1-S4), and the skills are level-divided according to Miller's pyramid (M1-M4).

  • Knowledge and understanding: Students should be able to discuss acute illnesses in children, adolescents, and newborns, as well as women before, during, and after childbirth (S3), and determine the level of care required and understand their own responsibilities (S3).
  • Skills: Students should be able to take medical histories, perform and assess somatic status, and identify and manage certain acute diseases in acutely ill children, adolescents, and newborns, as well as women during childbirth (M3).
  • Professional development: Students should be able to apply and integrate a humanistic and natural science perspective with evidence-based medicine in the management of acute diseases, and behave respectfully towards patients, other students, teachers, and staff, taking active responsibility for their learning and professional development.

Innehĺll

Content

The course focuses on the disciplines of pediatrics, neonatology, and obstetrics/gynecology. The study of pediatric conditions such as respiratory problems, infections, kidney diseases, neurological diseases, and seizures is deepened. The course also covers serious acute conditions in children and adolescents, such as severe infections and certain hematological, rheumatological, and immunological diseases. Acute obstetric conditions, such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, seizures, hypertension, sepsis, and complications during childbirth, are also addressed. Neonatal issues, including the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life, neonatal asphyxia, and congenital malformations, are discussed.

Professional development (PU) permeates the course, with department placements and practical exercises providing opportunities for reflection and training in everyday and ethically complex situations. Scientific development (VetU) is included through an in-depth assignment with project presentation.

Arbetsformer

Working Methods

  • Clinical placement (VFU) with individual feedback and clinical education at placements in neonatal departments, delivery wards, specialist maternity clinics, postnatal wards, pediatric emergency departments, and general pediatric care and investigation units.
  • Project work involves students selecting a specific medical issue within the subject area, searching for scientific literature, and possibly evidence-grading.
  • Skill training at the Clinical Training Center (KTC) in the form of interprofessional exercises (IPL) with midwifery students.

Examination

Examination

  • Clinical placement (VFU), simulated exercises, seminars, and individual project work.
  • Oral case-based examination in groups with individual assessment.
  • Written examination in the form of project presentation and abstract.

The course responsible teacher assesses whether and how absence from compulsory educational components can be compensated. Before the student has participated in the compulsory educational components or compensated for absence in accordance with the course responsible teacher's instructions, the study results cannot be finalized.

If there are special reasons or a need for adaptation for students with disabilities, the examiner may decide to deviate from the course plan's provisions regarding the examination form, number of examination opportunities, possibility of complementing, or exemption from compulsory educational elements.
