Program Overview
The Oftalmologi för sjuksköterskor (60 hp) program at Karolinska Institutet is designed for nurses working in ophthalmology and aims to provide advanced knowledge in the field.
Program Description
The program spans two semesters, HT25 - VT26, and is conducted at a full-time pace. It includes 8 instances of physical meetings, with 6 in the fall semester and 2 in the spring semester, each lasting 2-4 days. The theoretical parts of the program are largely conveyed through the Canvas learning platform, allowing for continuous self-study.
Program Objectives
The program aims to equip students with in-depth knowledge of ophthalmology, including the structure and function of the eye and visual system, examination methods, diagnoses, and treatments. Upon completion, students should be able to participate in high-quality, modern eye care.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes:
- Ögats anatomi, synfysiologi och optik (Anatomy, Physiology, and Optics of the Eye)
- Oftalmologi och oftalmologiska undersökningsmetoder (Ophthalmology and Ophthalmological Examination Methods)
- Kirurgisk oftalmologi och perioperativ vĺrd (Surgical Ophthalmology and Perioperative Care)
- Oftalmologisk vĺrd pĺ ögonmottagning (Ophthalmological Care in Eye Clinics)
- Elective modules within ophthalmology for nurses, including Operation, Glaukom, Neurooftalmologi, Retina, Barn- och skelning (Pediatric and Strabismus), Akutsjukvĺrd (Emergency Care), or Vetenskaplig metod (Scientific Method)
Admission Requirements
To be eligible, applicants must have:
- A minimum of 120 higher education credits, including a nursing degree
- Employment in eye care
Tuition Fee
The program fee is 110,000 SEK, excluding VAT.
Program Structure
The program combines theoretical studies with practical clinical training (VFU), where students arrange their own clinical placements. The VFU is assessed by the clinical supervisor based on the course objectives. Students also complete assignments that are assessed by the course leadership.

Students are required to activate their student account at Karolinska Institutet and will be provided with a student email address. It is essential to regularly check this email for important information from the university.
Campus and Facilities
The physical meetings are held at the Eye Center of Excellence on Eugeniavägen 12 in Solna, near S:t Eriks Eye Hospital and the Karolinska Institutet campus, which offers libraries, study areas, a student bookstore, and restaurants.
Code of Conduct and Confidentiality Agreement
Students must sign a confidentiality agreement and adhere to Karolinska Institutet's code of conduct at the start of the program.
Schedule
A preliminary schedule is available, with adjustments possible until two weeks before the course starts. The final schedule for the spring semester (VT26) will be published in December.
