Course Description
The Beroendetillstĺnd course is designed for individuals working in addiction care, social services, or psychiatry who wish to improve their knowledge of addiction and harmful use to better assess and plan treatment interventions.
Course Content
The course covers:
- Epidemiology of alcohol and drug consumption/habits, both nationally and internationally
- Overview of primary and secondary preventive interventions
- Substance knowledge, addiction development, and the brain's reward system
- Biological and psychological assessment instruments
- Evidence-based psychosocial and pharmacological treatment
- Comorbidity and dual diagnosis
- Ethics and legislation
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe basic concepts related to addiction/harmful use
- Understand and describe basic neurobiological, psychological, and social mechanisms of addiction/harmful use
- Demonstrate an overview of effective pharmacological/psychosocial treatment methods for harmful use/addiction and comorbidity
- Use certain instruments to assess and plan treatment interventions
- Apply the humanistic value base that aims to preserve and consider human dignity
- Evaluate current research in the field

Eligibility
Professional experience in addiction care, psychiatry, social services, or equivalent private care is required. Participants must work in a relevant field.
Course Structure
The course consists of lectures, group work, individual studies, and online learning via the Canvas platform. Attendance is mandatory, with a minimum of 80% participation required to receive a course certificate.

Location
The course will be held in central Stockholm. Information about the course location will be provided closer to the start date.
Price
The course price is 19,900 SEK, excluding VAT. The price includes literature, audience copies, and articles, as well as coffee/tea, sandwiches in the morning, and snacks in the afternoon. Lunch is taken at the participant's own expense.

Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to cancel the course if there are too few applicants.
Registration is binding. Cancellation later than six (6) weeks before the start of the education will be charged 50 percent of the course cost, and cancellation later than four (4) weeks before the start of the education will be charged the full course cost.
