Degree Project for Master's Degree (60 credits) in Optometry

Course Overview

The Degree Project for Master's Degree (60 credits) in Optometry is a 15-credit course that aims to develop students' ability to plan, conduct, and present a scientific study in optometry.

Course Description

The course is designed for students who want to take a master's degree in clinical optometry by completing a degree project. During the course, students will develop their ability to independently plan, conduct, and present a scientific study in optometry. They will also develop their ability to critically examine, analyze, and discuss scientific work.

Course Objectives

After completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and formulate research questions, plan, conduct, and present a scientific study in optometry
  • Integrate knowledge and analyze, assess, and manage complex phenomena, issues, and situations, even with limited information
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of optometry, including an overview of the field and specialized knowledge in certain areas
  • Show insight into current research and development work and knowledge of the relationship between science and proven experience and its significance for professional practice
  • Describe different research methods in theoretical and clinical optometric research and related research

Course Content

The degree project is based to a large extent on the students' own initiatives and independent work. The student will, under supervision, conduct a descriptive or experimental study, including all stages of the research process: literature searches, project planning, research questions, data collection, data processing, interpretation, and presentation. The thesis is written individually or in pairs with another student on the course.

Examination

The course is examined in the following ways:

  • Written thesis, graded as Fail (U) or Pass (G)
  • Opposition (presentation, defense, and discussion of the thesis), graded as Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with Distinction (VG)
  • Respondent (presentation, defense, and discussion of another student's thesis), graded as Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with Distinction (VG)

Grading Criteria

To receive a Pass (G) on the entire course, the student must receive a Pass (G) on all three examination components. To receive a Pass with Distinction (VG) on the entire course, the student must receive a Pass with Distinction (VG) on the opposition and respondent components, and a Pass (G) on the written thesis.

Special Eligibility

Special eligibility requirements apply to this course. For students with an optician degree or a bachelor's degree in optometry, additional requirements apply. For students with a nursing degree, additional requirements also apply.
