Medicinsk etik (Medical Ethics)

Course Overview

The course provides an in-depth understanding of medical ethics, focusing on the development and relationship between ethical theory, practice, and law in healthcare, research, and public health.

Course Description

The course covers various topics, including:

• Ethical issues in the beginning and end of life
• Prioritization
• Patient autonomy and coercive care
• Public health ethics
• The boundary between research, care, and treatment
• Handling of experimental animals

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

• Explain the meaning of central ethical concepts, values, norms, and principles relevant to healthcare and research
• Describe the most common normative ethical theories and distinguish between normative and descriptive ethics
• Discuss the development and content of national and international professional and research ethical rules and declarations
• Identify the characteristics of an ethical problem and distinguish it from psychological, religious, or legal problems
• Analyze ethical problems by specifying action alternatives, consequences for those involved, and the values or goals that are actualized
• Conduct ethical arguments and critically examine their own and others' ethical arguments

Course Format

The course includes lectures, literature studies, and seminars. Formative assessment is carried out through participation in seminars and writing short reflective essays.

Examination

The examination consists of a final oral examination and a written essay.
