Program Overview
Forskar-AT Program
The Forskar-AT program is an opportunity for funded research time during AT training. An active research activity at Karolinska Institutet (KI) is a prerequisite for receiving a Forskar-AT position.
About Forskar-AT
Forskar-AT involves combining regular clinical AT training (18-21 months) with 12 months of research. The AT doctor is given leave from clinical service for research at KI, and KI reimburses the institution for salary costs (lump sum). The blocks begin and end with clinical service, and the research periods are inserted between the clinical training sections (which means that the AT service is extended by 12 months of research).
Eligibility
Forskar-AT can be applied for by both doctoral students at KI and postdoctoral researchers with an active research activity at KI.
Utlysningar (Announcements)
Announcements for Forskar-AT are made twice a year.
Salary During Research Time and Current Payment Schedules
- Salary during research time at KI: Paid by the institution where the research takes place. KI finances the research time, and payment of a lump sum is made to the institution. Payment from KI centrally is made to the institution the year after the allocated research position has been granted.
- Information about payment of funds: The payment schedules are related to the level of contractual salaries for doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers with a medical degree, and are adjusted in the event of changes in KI's salary scale for doctoral appointments. The payment schedules also include compensation for salary cost surcharges (LKP) and the institution's indirect costs (INDI). From 2021, the current year's allocated Forskar-AT will be paid out as a one-time payment the following year. Before the new year's payment, a review of the lump sum will be made, and the amount will be adjusted in the event of major changes.

Surveys Within Research Education
In the spring of 2021, an anonymous survey was conducted among those who were allocated clinical research positions (including Forskar-ST) and Forskar-AT during the period 2006-2019. The clinical research positions include, in addition to Forskar-ST, three further funding programs that are not aimed at doctoral students (clinical postdoc, clinical researcher, and senior clinical researcher).
