Program Overview

Introduction to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Program

The Electrical and Computer Engineering program at Oregon State University is designed to provide students with the expertise to engineer advanced technologies used in various industries. This cutting-edge program is one of the first online programs of its kind in the nation and will provide students with technical skills in areas like electronics, power systems, computer networks, and digital hardware design.

Program Overview

The program is offered by Oregon State's College of Engineering and closely mirrors the on-campus learning experiences, including the use of kits that offer a hands-on approach to understanding complex concepts. The curriculum will introduce students to topics such as communications, signal processing, electronic materials and devices, energy systems, integrated electronic networking, and computer systems.

Skills and Knowledge

As a student in the online electrical and computer engineering degree program, you will gain in-demand skills, including:

  • Semiconductor processing
  • Electronic circuit design
  • Signal conditioning and inspection
  • Applied robotics
  • Computer architecture
  • Foundational electronics programming
  • Algorithmic thinking

Degree Requirements

A minimum of 180 quarter credits at least 60 of which must be upper-division credits are required to graduate with a degree in electrical and computer engineering, including:

  • OSU's Core Education
  • Major requirements: Electrical and computer engineering

Focus Areas

When pursuing an electrical and computer engineering online bachelor's degree, you will work with your academic advisor to choose one of the following focus areas, allowing you to concentrate your studies on an area of particular interest that aligns with your career goals:

  • Computer systems and networking
  • Electronic materials and devices
  • Energy systems
  • Integrated circuits
  • RF, microwaves and optoelectronics
  • Robotics
  • Signals, systems and communications

Upper-Division Coursework

At this time, the program's upper-division electrical and computer engineering (ECE) courses are in development and will be available in the coming years. The current 300-level and 400-level online elective courses focus primarily on computers and computer science.

Transfer Credits

Some degree requirements may be transferred from other institutions. Please note that a minimum of 45 credits of the last 75 credits in this degree program must be completed at Oregon State (online or on campus) to meet the academic residency requirement.

Accreditation

This program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET a nonprofit, nongovernmental agency that offers accreditation through a voluntary peer review process. ABET only offers accreditation to degree programs like this one that meet the highest quality standards in preparing graduates for their professions.

Admission Criteria

You can be directly admitted into the electrical and computer engineering degree program if you are considered ready to take calculus at OSU. This determination is based on the completed coursework shown on your transcripts and courses that are in progress or planned for later in the school year.

Honors Degree

As an undergraduate degree-seeking student, you can apply to earn an honors degree online in your academic major. Earning this prestigious degree gives you the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on research, complete a comprehensive thesis experience, and engage in co-curricular activities.

Certificates and Microcredentials

You can gain highly specialized skills that are in demand by employers and do it with less of a time and financial commitment when you earn a certificate or microcredential online with Oregon State. Choose from a large collection of short-form offerings that can help you upskill quickly.

Careers

The knowledge you acquire in Oregon State's degree in electrical and computer engineering will help you fill in-demand jobs in the global marketplace. You will also benefit from OSU's connection to industry giants such as Intel, Garmin, HP, and Micron, as well as a quarterly virtual Networking Night from the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. By completing this program, you will have the skills to contribute to industries as diverse as agriculture, healthcare, consumer electronics, energy, robotics, and beyond.

Tuition Fees

The online delivery cost is $449 per credit, based on current tuition rates. No additional charge is applied for nonresident students. However, this does not include course materials and associated fees and expenses. The program offers four start terms per year.
