Introduction to the DVM Program

The Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University offers a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. The program is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, Council on Education (COE).


Steps to Apply

To apply for the DVM program, follow these steps:


  1. Begin the VMCAS application process online.
  2. Take the Casper online, open-response situational judgment test.
  3. Request all transcripts be sent directly to VMCAS by September 15, 2025.
  4. Complete VMCAS with electronic letters of recommendation prior to September 15, 2025.
  5. Complete Oregon State University Supplemental Application questions on VMCAS by September 15, 2025.
  6. Pay the supplemental fee of $60.00 via the applicant portal.
  7. Submit GRE scores to VMCAS (optional).

Detailed Information for Applying

VMCAS Application

The Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine participates in the Veterinary Medical Colleges Application Service (VMCAS), a centralized application processing service. VMCAS applications are available online beginning January 22, 2025, and must be submitted electronically by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time/8:59 p.m. Pacific Time on September 15, 2025.


Casper

All applicants are required to complete Casper as part of their application. Casper is an online, open-response situational judgment test that takes 65-85 minutes to complete. You will register for US Casper 2 (CSP-20100).


Supplemental Application Questions

You must submit the CCVM supplemental application questions on VMCAS. Supplemental application questions are available online on VMCAS as of May 8, 2025, and must be completed by September 15, 2025.


Letters of Recommendation

You must arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to VMCAS. At least one letter of recommendation must be from a veterinarian with whom you have had significant contact.


Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The GRE is optional, but applicants are welcome to submit their scores to VMCAS if they feel that their scores are a good reflection of their academic potential.


Transcripts

You must submit official transcripts from all institutions directly to VMCAS electronically or via the mail. Transcripts are due to VMCAS by September 15, 2025.


Testing Scores

The CCVM accepts the following credits for lower division courses: Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) Credits.


Residency Requirements

Approximately 48 Oregon residents and 48 non-residents will be accepted each year into the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at OSU. Oregon residents are required to be certified as in-state residents by September 1, 2026.


WICHE Applicants

The approximately 48 available non-resident positions include positions for students who are applying through the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) contract from Hawaii, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Wyoming.


Notification of Admission Status

You will be notified of your admission status between December and February. Admission decisions will be posted to your Applicant Portal. You will also receive an email notifying you that an update has been posted.


Admission Criteria

  • A 3.0 or higher science GPA is required for non-resident applicants.
  • The science GPA is calculated by VMCAS.
  • There is no GPA requirement for Oregon residents or WICHE applicants.
  • International applicants follow the same application steps as above.
  • All international transcripts must be articulated/translated to a U.S. (4.0) grading scale prior to submission to VMCAS.
  • The TOEFL is required for applicants from non-English speaking countries.
