Program Overview
Introduction to the DVM Program
The DVM Program at the Gary R. Carlson, MD, College of Veterinary Medicine is a four-year professional program that leads to a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
Academic Requirements for Admission
To be considered for admission, applicants must have a strong background in biology, chemistry, and physics. Courses in English, social science, and speech are also necessary, as interpersonal and professional communications skills are important assets in veterinary medicine.

The application process typically begins with the submission of an application, which may include pending coursework. However, all required coursework must be completed prior to August 15 of the year of matriculation.
Admission Criteria
The admissions committee considers a range of factors, including academic performance, veterinary experience, and personal qualities. A minimum science GPA of 3.0 or higher is required for non-resident applicants, and a minimum grade of C- or better is required in all prerequisite courses.

Majors and Prerequisite Courses
No preference is given for any particular major, and applicants are encouraged to develop plans for an alternate career. All required prerequisite courses must be completed prior to August 15 of the year of matriculation.
Casper Requirement
Starting with the admission cycle for the fall 2027 class, applicants are required to take the Casper, an online, open-response situational judgment test.

Program Completion
Four years of study are required to complete the program and obtain a DVM degree, regardless of the number of years spent in pre-professional or pre-veterinary preparation.
Veterinary Technician Program
OSU does not offer a veterinary technician program, but Portland Community College and Central Oregon Community College offer programs in this field.
