Program Overview
Intensive English Program Academic English (IEPA)
The Intensive English Program Academic English (IEPA) is designed to help international students improve their English language skills and prepare for academic success at Oregon State University.
Course Offerings
The IEPA program offers a range of courses to help students develop their English language skills, including:
- IEPA 002NC: Foundation Listening/Speaking: Engages students in activities that familiarize them with English pronunciation and conversation models.
- IEPA 003NC: Orientation: Skills for Living in the U.S.: Focuses on helping international students adjust to living in the United States, with an emphasis on developing skills and strategies for success in and out of the classroom.
- IEPA 005NC: Test Preparation: Prepares students for standardized math, English language, and graduate school examinations, with a focus on test-taking strategies and language skills essential for success.
- IEPA 007NC: Foundation Reading/Vocabulary: Engages students in activities that familiarize them with the English alphabet and common sight words, building up to sentence-level understanding.
- IEPA 009NC: Foundation Writing/Grammar: Engages students in activities that familiarize them with English spelling and writing conventions, with a focus on writing simple sentences with basic grammar for everyday purposes.
- IEPA 011NC: Academic Listening/Speaking 1: Develops basic listening and speaking skills, with extensive practice in listening and responding to authentic and adapted texts about everyday topics and classroom language.
- IEPA 013NC: Guided Learning: Supports learning taking place in Foundation and Level 1 classes, with a focus on vocabulary and basic English skills.
- IEPA 014NC: Academic Reading/Vocabulary 1: Develops basic reading and vocabulary skills, with extensive practice in reading adapted texts about everyday topics.
- IEPA 018NC: Academic Writing/Grammar 1: Develops forms and patterns of basic English grammar used in simple sentences and paragraphs, with extensive practice in understanding and producing grammatical structures necessary for achievement of Level 1 learning outcomes.
- IEPA 021NC: Academic Listening/Speaking 2: Develops listening and speaking skills with a movement beyond the basic level, with extensive practice in listening and note-taking to adapted lectures and discussions.
- IEPA 024NC: Academic Reading/Vocabulary 2: Develops reading and vocabulary skills with a movement beyond the basic level, with extensive practice in reading longer texts on a wider range of topics.
- IEPA 028NC: Academic Writing/Grammar 2: Develops forms and patterns of English grammar used in paragraphs and compositions, with extensive practice in understanding and producing grammatical structures necessary for achievement of Level 2 learning outcomes.
- IEPA 031NC: Academic Listening/Speaking 3: Develops listening and speaking skills with a movement toward academic tasks and projects at Level 3, with extensive practice in longer and more varied listening and presentational skills.
- IEPA 034NC: Academic Reading/Vocabulary 3: Develops reading and vocabulary skills with a movement toward academic tasks at Level 3, with extensive practice in reading longer and more varied texts.
- IEPA 038NC: Academic Writing/Grammar 3: Develops writing and grammar skills with a movement toward academic tasks and projects at Level 3, with extensive practice in developing syntax and composition skills.
- IEPA 041NC: Academic Listening/Speaking 4: Develops academic listening and speaking skills with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, with extensive practice in listening and note-taking to adapted lectures and discussions.
- IEPA 043NC: IDL: Provides individualized directed learning, with students assuming more responsibility for their learning and the instructor providing a framework and contractual agreement.
- IEPA 044NC: Academic Reading/Vocabulary 4: Develops reading and vocabulary skills with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, with extensive practice in reading longer and more complex material.
- IEPA 046NC: Fundamental Academic Extensions: Reinforces skills needed to be successful in an academic setting, with opportunities to improve academic reading comprehension, annotation and paraphrasing skills, note-taking, and group participation.
- IEPA 048NC: Academic Writing/Grammar 4: Develops formal, academic writing skills, including researching, analyzing, and organizing the standard academic essay, with an introduction to the concept of intellectual property and referencing.
- IEPA 049NC: Special Topics: Offers topics such as English Through Photography, English Through Movies, and Critical Listening and Speaking, with all sections open to Level 4 and above.
- IEPA 050NC: Academic Reading/Writing 5: Develops reading and writing skills and strategies at Level 5, with a focus on skills such as analyzing, synthesizing, evaluating, and critical thinking.
- IEPA 051NC: Academic Listening/Speaking 5: Develops listening and speaking skills for use in an academic context at Level 5, with assignments including researched expository and persuasive class presentations.
- IEPA 052NC: Guided Observation: Prepares Level 5 or 6 students for the American university classroom, with instructor guidance and opportunities to develop English skills, especially listening and note-taking.
- IEPA 055NC: TOEFL Preparation: Develops strategies to improve scores on the iBT TOEFL exam, with practice in all skills, particularly integrated skills.
- IEPA 057NC: Advanced Grammar Through Writing: Increases the ability to recognize and use correct advanced grammar structures, with a focus on developing increased fluency and accuracy in writing.
- IEPA 059NC: Special Topics: Offers topics such as Advanced Vocabulary Building, Creative Nonfiction, and Critical Thinking Through Reading and Writing, with all sections open to Level 5 or 6.
- IEPA 060NC: Academic Reading/Writing 6: Develops reading and writing skills and strategies at Level 6, with a focus on skills such as analyzing, synthesizing, evaluating, and critical thinking.
- IEPA 061NC: Academic Listening/Speaking 6: Develops listening and speaking skills for use in an academic context at Level 6, with a focus on comprehending university-level material and developing note-taking skills.
- IEPA 066NC: Advanced Academic Extensions: Reinforces and expands skills and strategies needed to be successful in a US university, with opportunities to improve comprehension of lectures, note-taking skills, and ability to work in groups.
