The Anthropology Undergraduate Major is designed to promote awareness of the complexity and diversity of humanity and the human experiencepast and presentin its cultural, biological, and ecological contexts. This major emphasizes cultural sensitivity and enables students to pursue a broad range of jobs requiring a liberal arts background.

Anthropology seeks to promote awareness of the complexity and diversity of humanity and the human experiencepast and presentin its cultural, biological, and ecological contexts. An Anthropology degree prepares students for work situations that emphasize cross-cultural awareness, international contacts, and management of cultural resources. The curriculum provides a sound basis for later professional or graduate education.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate a broad and comparative understanding of humanity, the diversity of world cultures.
- Demonstrate an understanding of core tenets of the four-field approach (sociocultural, archaeological, linguistics, and biological) within anthropology as a discipline.
- Demonstrate the skills necessary to collect, analyze, and interpret data relevant to one or more of the subfields of anthropology within the context of anthropological theory.
- Demonstrate the ability to follow ethical and professional standards for cultural sensitivity in interpersonal and cross-cultural interactions.
Course Requirements
The following courses are required for the major:
- Core 1: Select three courses from the following:
- ANTH 101: Introduction to Anthropology
- ANTH 210: Comparative Cultures
- ANTH 230: Time Travelers
- ANTH 240: Introduction to Biological Anthropology
- Core 2:
- ANTH 345: Biological and Cultural Constructions of Race
- ANTH 350: Language, Culture, and Society
- ANTH 370: Anthropological Theories
- ANTH 475: Anthropology in Practice
- Option: 21-33 credits
- Total credits required for graduation: 180
Major Requirements
Majors must additionally fulfill requirements for one of the options, plus upper-division electives in Anthropology to complete a total of 60 credits for the major. The following restrictions apply:
- No more than 6 credits internship ANTH 410
- No more than 6 credits from ANTH 311, ANTH 312, ANTH 313, ANTH 314, ANTH 315, ANTH 316, ANTH 317, ANTH 318, ANTH 319
- At least 12 credits at the 400-level excluding blanket-numbered (ANTH 401ANTH 409) and internship (ANTH 410) credits
- A grade of C or better is required for all courses used to complete major requirements. Such courses cannot be taken S/U
