Program Overview


Management Undergraduate Major (BA, BS, HBA, HBS)

The Management curriculum helps prepare students for careers as professionals and/or supervisors in goods-producing and service organizations. Students obtain theory-driven and practical knowledge for the management of systems, personnel, projects, and quality. In the core management coursework, students gain strategic communication and leadership skills, learn to run dynamic projects, and acquire the knowledge and skills that prepare them for finding, motivating, and leading talented employees.

Specializations

The Management major offers three specializations:


  • Human Resource Management: Focuses on the systems and practices associated with hiring and managing an organization's human capital as they relate to the strategic goals of the organization.
  • General Management: Focuses on the broad range of knowledge and skills essential for managing complex business processes, addressing operational risks, and leading culturally diverse teams.
  • People Analytics: Supports an evidence-based approach to workforce management and provides students with the knowledge necessary for using data to support talent management processes.

Both the Human Resource Management and the People Analytics specializations are recognized by the Society of HR Management and help students prepare to take the SHRM-CP exam and become a SHRM Certified Professional.


Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:


  • Recognize, discuss, and demonstrate concepts, techniques, and decision tools available to manage projects.
  • Effectively lead work groups and teams by creating a shared vision, mobilizing energy around the vision, and managing obstacles to its achievement.
  • Apply human resource management principles and law to evaluate human resource initiatives and manage an organization's human capital.
  • Utilize principles of effective negotiation to plan, prepare, and manage negotiations and conflicts.
  • Specialization-specific outcomes:
    • Human Resource Management: Describe how to implement best practices in employee recruitment and selection, and differentiate methods of compensation aimed at motivating and rewarding employee contributions to the organization.
    • General Management: Use appropriate frameworks to assess supply chain operations, create solutions to identified problems, and develop responses to operational/implementation risks, and manage the effects of cultural diversity on employee behavior and performance.
    • People Analytics: Recognize business analytics opportunities and utilize analytic techniques to support key organizational decisions, describe how to implement best practices in employee recruitment and selection, and differentiate methods of compensation aimed at motivating and rewarding employee contributions to the organization.

Curriculum Requirements

The lower-division business core involves completion of courses within the first and second year that build a solid foundation for the upper-division management and business curricula. The requirements include:


  • Business Core: 85 credits
  • Management Curriculum: 32 credits
  • Baccalaureate Core: 52 credits
  • Unrestricted Electives: 11 credits
  • Total Credits: 180

Business Administration Core Curriculum

The business administration core curriculum provides students with a broad overview of business, including:

  • Business Core courses, such as financial accounting, managerial accounting, principles of marketing, business law, finance, and entrepreneurship.

Management Curriculum

Management students must complete 32 credits, including:

  • Specialization: 12 credits
    • Select one of the following specializations: General Management, Human Resource Management, or People Analytics
