Program Overview


Speech Communication Undergraduate Major

The Speech Communication Undergraduate Major offers students the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, with options in Communication and Theater Arts. This major is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of communication competence in various contexts.


Program Options

  • Communication option: This option consists of 48 credits of coursework and requires students to complete an undergraduate prerequisite core before applying to the major.
    • Students who are working on completing the prerequisite core are placed in the Pre-Communication major (major code 979).
  • Theater Arts option: This option consists of 51 credits of coursework and does not require students to complete the undergraduate prerequisite core.
    • The course requirements for students pursuing the Theater Arts option are held to a minimum, allowing students and their faculty advisors to devise a program tailored to the student's specific needs and objectives.

Learning Outcomes

Students pursuing the Speech Communication Undergraduate Major will demonstrate:


  • Understanding and value of communication competence in public speaking, argumentation and critical discourse, and interpersonal communication as they pertain to personal and professional activities and contexts.
  • Ability to articulate relevant theory and research in the contexts of their practical applications.
  • Recognition of the social, cultural, and historical significance of rhetoric and other communication phenomena.
  • Preparation to pursue further professional or academic endeavors in one's selected communication discipline.

Requirements

Students pursuing the bachelor's degree in Speech Communication must successfully complete the following requirements:


  • Communication option (48 credits) or Theater Arts option (51 credits)
  • College of Liberal Arts Core requirements (15 credits)
  • Oregon State University Baccalaureate Core (48 credits)
  • Oregon State University requirements for the BA or BS
  • Total credits required for graduation: 180
