Overview

The Master's program in Art History in a Global Context: Focus on East Asia is offered by the Department of History and Cultural Studies at Freie Universit‰t Berlin.


Admission Requirements

For admittance to the master's program, applicants need to fulfill the following admission requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in East Asian art history comprising at least 60 credit points or an equivalent university degree in a cultural studies field or an East Asian studies field (Chinese studies, Japanese studies, Korean studies) with at least 30 credit points in East Asian art history.
  • Proof of English language skills (level B1 CEFR).
  • Proof of skills in an East Asian language (level A2 CEFR): Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

Fees

Students do not pay any tuition fees; the university only charges semester fees and contributions each semester.


Subject

East Asian art history deals with the art and culture of China, Korea, and Japan. The object of study is eastern Asian art of all genres, from the neolithic to the present. This includes:


  • Painting
  • Calligraphy
  • Sculpture
  • New media art
  • Architecture
  • Garden art
  • Applied arts The works are interrogated in terms of their aesthetic structure, content, and the historical, cultural, and political conditions of their production and reception. Additional fields of research are the history of the discipline and its methods, as well as the conservation, presentation, and teaching of East Asian art.
