Program Overview

Introduction to the Bachelor Program in Grundschulpädagogik

The Bachelor program in Grundschulpädagogik at the Freie Universität Berlin is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of elementary school pedagogy. The program is structured to ensure that students acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to become effective teachers in elementary schools.

Program Structure

The Bachelor program in Grundschulpädagogik consists of the following components:

  • Two study subjects, each with a scope of 45 credit points (LP)
  • A specialization subject with a scope of 50 LP
  • The study area of "Lehramtsbezogene Berufswissenschaft" (LBW) with a scope of 30 LP
  • A Bachelor's thesis with a scope of 10 LP

The standard period of study is six semesters. The program is composed of subject-specific modules, which are combined to create an individual study plan. Students are advised to follow the "exemplary study plan" to avoid overlaps, excessive workload, or idle periods.

Study Area of Lehramtsbezogene Berufswissenschaft (LBW)

The study area of LBW is a compulsory part of the Bachelor program with a teaching option. In this study area, students must complete 30 LP. The modules within the LBW enable students to acquire fundamental competencies in educational science, language education, and general didactics. The basic module "Deutsch als Zweitsprache/Sprachbildung" (German as a second language/language education) and the module "Pädagogisches Handeln in Schulen" (pedagogical action in schools) are mandatory for all students pursuing a teaching degree in the Bachelor program.

The module "Pädagogisches Handeln in Schulen" includes a career-oriented internship, where students gain initial experiences as teachers and become familiar with the school environment. This school internship is theory-based and takes place over two semesters. The lecture is held during the winter semester, followed by a preparation seminar in the subsequent summer semester. The internship and accompanying reflection seminar are completed during the summer semester break.

The following subject combinations are possible:

Transition to the Master's Program

To ensure a seamless transition between the Bachelor and Master's programs, students can apply for a Master's place without having to provide the Bachelor's degree certificate. A 2/3 confirmation is required, which is issued by the examination office of the core subject. This confirmation certifies that at least 2/3 of all credits have been completed and that the remaining credits can be completed by the end of the semester.
