Program Overview

Master's Program for Teaching at Primary Schools with a Quereinstieg (Umstiegs-Master) Profile

The Master's program for teaching at primary schools with a Quereinstieg (Umstiegs-Master) profile is designed for students who have already completed a combined Bachelor's degree with a teaching option (or equivalent) for ISS/Gymnasium with the subject combinations German/History or German/Political Education/Political Science. This program allows students to switch to primary school teaching between their Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

Program Structure

The Master's program comprises 120 credit points and is divided into the following components:

  • Mathematics (45 credit points)
  • German (15 credit points)
  • General studies in combination with social sciences (15 credit points)
  • Educational science and general primary school pedagogy (30 credit points)
  • Master's thesis (15 credit points)

Admission Requirements

The admission requirement for the Umstiegs-Master is a first professionally qualifying teaching-related German or equivalent foreign university degree in a Bachelor's program or a comparable degree with the subject combination German and History or German and Political Education/Political Science for teaching.

Application and Admission

All information about the application process can be found on the website of the Admissions and Enrollment department. To ensure a seamless transition between Bachelor's and Master's studies, it is possible to apply for a Master's place without having the Bachelor's degree certificate. A 2/3 certification is required for this purpose. More detailed information can be found on the overview page for transitioning from Bachelor's to Master's.
