Introduction to the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program

The Hospitality and Tourism Management program at the Dedman College of Hospitality is a comprehensive major that has been preparing students for leadership positions in hospitality management since 1947. The program boasts an almost 100 percent graduate placement rate.

The hospitality and tourism management major is student-focused and industry-driven, guided by best practices and a global perspective. Students receive a unique personalized experience every step of the way along their academic journey. The industry engagement, internships, and student activities in this major prepare students for a career in making other people's comfort, enjoyment, and happiness their business.


Curriculum

The curriculum for the Hospitality and Tourism Management program includes:


  • Prerequisite Coursework (12 hours):
    • MAC 1105: College Algebra
    • HFT 1000: Introduction to Hospitality
    • ECO 2013: Principles of Macroeconomics
    • ECO 2023: Principles of Microeconomics
    • CGS 2100: Microcomputer Applications for Business
    • CGS 2518: Spreadsheets for Business
  • Requirements for Progression to the Upper-Division Major:
    1. Completion of at least 52 semester hours
    2. A cumulative FSU grade point average of at least 2.0 on all college work attempted
    3. Satisfactory completion of all required prerequisite coursework
    4. Successful completion of 1st & 2nd GE English and 1st & 2nd GE Math coursework
    5. HFT 1000 is not required, but highly recommended, for transfer students prior to admission
  • Major Program of Study (39 hours):
    • Community college courses may not be substituted for 3000/4000 level courses.
    • All courses must be completed with a grade of C minus or better and a minimum GPA of 2.00 in courses used to satisfy the major requirements.
  • Computer Skills Competency: No additional hours needed beyond prerequisites (CGS 2100 or CGS 2518).
  • Oral Communication Competency (3 hours beyond major coursework): Students must demonstrate the ability to orally transmit ideas and information clearly. This requirement may be met through a University-approved college-level course.

    • HFT 4502: Integrated Marketing for Hospitality
    • HFT 4224: Hospitality Leadership and Ethics
    • HFT 3941*: Internship
  • Major Coursework (27 hours):
    • HFT 3431: Hospitality Managerial Accounting
    • HFT 3603: Law for Hospitality Operations
    • HFT 3806: Introduction to Food & Beverage Management
    • HFT 4253: Lodging & Luxury Hotel Management
    • HFT 4471: Revenue Management in Hospitality
    • HFT 4802: Catering Management
    • HFT 4941*: Work Experience
    • HFT or LEI: Elective Listed Below (students must complete at least 3 credit hours of Management Internship (HFT 3941) as part of their work experience)

Electives

Majors must have a total of 12 credit hours between HFT 3941 and elective requirements. Students can complete additional credit hours of HFT 3941 and use them as substitutes for elective requirements.

Additional Information/Requirements

  1. Hospitality and Tourism Management majors must complete 1,000 hours of work experience in the hospitality industry at the post-secondary level.
  2. Students are required to complete an Internship(s) for academic credit (HFT 3941) through the Dedman College as part of their work experience.
  3. In addition to the requirements outlined above, each student must complete all University-wide requirements for graduation.
  4. Students needing elective hours to satisfy the University 120 total hours requirement are encouraged to take additional courses from the list of hospitality electives that are taught in the Dedman College beyond the semester hours required.
  5. Not all hospitality management courses are taught every semester.
  6. The college offers several international opportunities for students, including study abroad, global exchanges, and international internships.
  7. Students must not enroll in any course at another institution without first receiving approval from the Dedman College of Hospitality.
