MAE MS Degree Requirements

The GRE requirement has been waived for all engineering master's applicants applying through Fall 2026.


MS Thesis Option

All students must take the following minimum distribution of courses for a total of 30 credit hours:


  • Core Courses: Nine semester hours
    • EML 5060: Analysis in Mechanical Engineering I
    • Two core courses in the student's major area
  • Mechanical Engineering Courses: Six semester hours
    • Any two courses in Mechanical Engineering
  • Elective Courses: Nine semester hours
    • Select three graduate-level, letter-graded courses in engineering, mathematics, and/or any science discipline
  • Graduate Seminar: EML 5935 Mechanical Engineering Seminar (0)
  • Thesis: Six semester hours
    • EML 5971: Thesis
  • Thesis Defense: EML 8976 - Masters Thesis Defense

MS Sustainable Energy

All students must take the following minimum distribution of courses for a total of 30 credit hours:


  • Core Courses: Fifteen semester hours
    • EML 5060: Analysis in Mechanical Engineering I
    • CHM 5153: Engineering Electrochemistry or an approved equivalent course
    • EML 5451: Energy Conversion Systems for Sustainability
    • EML 5452: Sustainable Power Generation
    • EML 5930: Sustainable Energy Utilization
