The Master of Arts in Patent Practice from Case Western Reserve University is a unique program designed to prepare students for a career as a patent agent. This program is the first of its kind in Ohio and one of only a handful in the nation.
About the Program
The program aims to fill the demand for professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications. It is an alternative for students who wish to pursue a career in patent practice without having to take the full three-year JD.
What to Expect
The program immerses students in patent law and patent office practice through a series of courses and experiential opportunities. Students will learn the intricacies of patent law and represent actual clients, preparing and filing patent applications on their behalf in the IP Venture Clinic. The curriculum is based on a multi-disciplinary approach to patent practice, equipping students with the required knowledge, skills, and experience to become productive patent agents in law firms and corporate legal departments.

Admission Requirements
The university reviews applications on a rolling basis. For admission consideration, the following are required:
- Completed online application
- Personal statement
- Two letters of recommendation
- Official transcripts
- TOEFL scores (if applicable)
- Affidavit of financial support required for F1 and J1 visa documentation (if applicable)
