About Program

Program Overview

Pathology

The Doctor of Philosophy in Pathology is a research-based program that allows students to conduct research on infectious diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. The program is offered by Case Western Reserve University, one of the top research universities in the U.S.

About the Program

The program offers three tracks: immunology, cancer biology, and molecular basis of disease. Students learn from renowned faculty and have the opportunity to shadow physician-scientists at places like the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. The tuition-free PhD is part of the Biomedical Sciences Training Program, which provides an interdisciplinary look into pathology.

What to Expect

The three program tracks allow students to carve out a niche for themselves in the field. The cancer biology training program focuses on understanding what causes cancer progression. The immunology training program covers innate immunity, vaccine development, and immunopathology. The molecular and cellular basis of disease training program explores tissue injury and healing.

Beyond the Classroom

Students have access to additional research and training grants, such as the Medical Scientist Training Program and the Cancer Biology Training Grant. They also have access to facilities like the Human Tissue Procurement Facility, which conducts tissue microarray, histology, and immunohistochemistry services.
