Molecular Virology, PhD

Overview

The Molecular Virology PhD program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of molecular virology. The program is offered through the Biomedical Sciences Training Program (BSTP) or the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP).


Program Requirements

To earn a PhD in Molecular Virology, students must complete the following requirements:


  • 400-level graduate Core and Elective coursework, including Responsible Conduct of Research and Research Rigor and Reproducibility
  • Attend the joint student seminars (MVIR 435) for at least 3 semesters (total of 3 credit hours)
  • Take MVIR 450 and both of the following fundamental courses: MVIR 445 and MVIR 450, which are offered on alternating spring semesters
  • Successfully complete a qualifying examination for advancement to candidacy in the form of a short grant proposal with oral defense
  • Meet twice a year with the thesis committee, present seminars in the department, and fulfill journal publication requirements

Biomedical Sciences Training Program (BSTP) Requirements

  • Coursework: integrated courses in Cell and Molecular Biology (IBMS 453, IBMS 455), biostatistics (IBMS 450), and a literature-based reading course (IBMS 456A)
  • Research Rotations: complete at least three rotations to explore research areas and become familiar with faculty members and their laboratories
  • Choosing a Thesis Advisor: select an advisor for dissertation research during the first year

  • First Year:
    • Fall: IBMS 453, IBMS 455, IBMS 457, BSTP 400 or MSTP 400
    • Spring: MVIR 435, elective graduate coursework, MVIR 601, IBMS 500
  • Second Year:
    • Fall: MVIR 435, elective graduate coursework, MVIR 601
    • Spring: MVIR 435, elective graduate coursework, MVIR 601
  • Third Year +: full-time dissertation research (MVIR 701)
