MD PhD Program

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) provides the opportunity for students to combine medical training with research training in either the Biomedical Physiology Training Program or the Structural Biology & Biophysics Training Program.


  • Students complete the first two years of medical training before starting research full-time in a laboratory.
  • Students are required to fulfill all degree requirements for the Ph.D. training program before completing the last two years of medical school.
  • The combined MD/Ph.D. program generally takes six to seven years to complete.
  • The program strives to optimize coursework and research experience for future physicians interested in medical research and academic careers.
  • Most students receive a full tuition waiver, stipend, and health benefits during their studies.
