Program Overview
Introduction to the Shipwreck Camp Program
The Shipwreck Camp is a unique educational experience designed for students aged 12 to 16. This two-week program is inspired by the research and exploration of Dr. Robert Ballard, known for his work on the JASON Project and the discovery of the Titanic wreckage.
Program Overview
The Shipwreck Camp will engage participants in field science and exploration, weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with times varying depending on planned events. The program is based on the campus of Case Western Reserve University but includes day trips to various sites around northeast Ohio, such as Cleveland Lakefront State Park and the Mentor Headlands.
Eligibility and Requirements
To participate in the Shipwreck Camp, students must:
- Be at least 12 years old and not older than 16 by the start of the camp in 2025.
- Be in good health.
- Be able to get into and out of small or large boats.
- Not be afraid of water, insects, boats, or the outdoors.
- Have advantageous but not required swimming skills.
- Have familiarity with internet searches and computer skills in Microsoft Office software packages.
Program Activities
During the two-week program, participants will:
- Read novels related to exploration.
- Meet local experts.
- Build remotely operated vehicles for underwater exploration.
- Conduct research necessary to find a wreck in Lake Erie.
- Use the tools of a scientist and conduct field research.
- Embrace the history of the Great Lakes region.
- Immerse themselves in an introduction to SCUBA and snorkeling.
- Develop navigational skills on land and water.
- Discover what weather contributes to shipwrecks in the Great Lakes.
- Develop a plan and find a wreck.
- Share their discoveries.
