Introduction to the Collaborative Doctoral Research Degree Program

The Collaborative Doctoral Research Degree Program (CDRDP) is a unique opportunity for students to pursue a PhD at both the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and one of its international partner universities. This program allows students to divide their time between UTS and the partner institution, establishing a joint supervision arrangement at both institutions.

Types of Students

There are two types of students who may participate in the CDRDP:

  • Outbound students: whose home university is UTS
  • Inbound students: whose home university is one of UTS's partner universities

Role of the Supervisor

The supervision process for CDRDP candidates is the same as for other PhD candidates. However, outbound students may spend slightly less time (2-3 years) at UTS, and inbound students will spend a minimum of 12 months at UTS. Supervisors will work with their students and the supervisors from partner universities to complete stage assessments and reviews of progress required as part of their UTS degree.

Thesis Submission and Examination Requirements

The thesis and examination process will vary from the standard process, depending on the agreement with the other institution and supervisor. Students may be required to submit one thesis to both institutions or develop separate theses for each.

Application Process

The application process differs for inbound and outbound students. For outbound students, the supervisor must email the Graduate Research School with the student's details, proposed partner institution, collaborative supervisor's name and department, collaborative research plan, and evidence of support from the faculty. For inbound students, the supervisor must work with the student to develop a research proposal that includes a timeline with a minimum 12-month stay at UTS and clear milestones to be achieved at each institution.
