Program Overview
Introduction to Honours Programs
Honours programs offer a unique opportunity for students to develop their research skills and gain a competitive edge in their employment prospects. An Honours degree can open the door for further research study, equipping students with the prerequisite research skills to undertake a research degree such as the PhD.
Benefits of Honours Programs
The Honours course is a research-based program that allows students to explore their research potential and develop significant insights in a specific field of biological knowledge. Through completion of Honours, students will develop valuable transferable skills that will complement their Bachelor's degree, including:
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Communication skills
- Time and project management skills
- Demonstration of independent investigation and achievement of more complex goals to employers
How Honours Programs Work
Under the guidance of an academic supervisor and their research team, students will undertake research and ultimately write a thesis to document their research journey from proposal to conclusion. Students will also deliver seminars explaining their research project.
Available Honours Programs
Students can undertake an Honours program as an undergraduate student in the following courses:
- Bachelor of Science Honours
- Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences (Honours)
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to Honours, students need to meet specific entry requirements, including:
- A credit average (i.e., at least 65%) in second- and third-year core subjects
- A commitment from a supervisor that they have an independent research project for the student and are willing to mentor them in completing the project over the Honours year
Application Process
Students can apply for a Bachelor's Honours course by submitting an application through the relevant portal. The application process involves:
- Finding a supervisor and finalising a project and agreement for supervision
- Submitting an application with supporting documentation
Program Structure
Honours programs are typically completed in full-time study mode over one year. Students will work under the guidance of an academic supervisor and their research team to complete their research project and thesis. Honours projects can also be completed externally under the collaborative guidance of both an external and a Faculty supervisor.
