Introduction to the Apple Foundation Program at UTS

The Apple Foundation Program at UTS offers a challenge-based learning environment where learners experience the creative process of solving real-world problems, collaborating in diverse teams, and designing apps using the Apple iOS ecosystem. This program empowers learners with a future-fit skill set at the intersection of technology, creativity, and entrepreneurship.


Program Overview

The Apple Foundation Program is designed to equip learners with skills in problem-solving, collaboration, creation, conceptual thinking, and adaptability, preparing them for the future of learning, working, and living. The program is fully funded and free for learners, with no prior knowledge, skills, or experience of coding required.

The program boasts a strong industry connection, providing learners with access to the latest Apple devices and a dedicated mentor team for each cohort.


Program Structure

The program runs on-campus and face-to-face in Building 11, level 3, room 300 (CB11.03.300). University programs run for 4 weeks, five days per week, from 9:30am to 2:00pm, while high school programs run for 3 weeks, five days per week, from 9:30am to 2:00pm. A MacBook and iPhone are loaned to all participating students.

The program introduces learners to highly transferable skills, including:


  • Design thinking
  • Prototyping apps and conceptual design
  • User Interface and User Experience design
  • Introduction to Swift coding
  • Introduction to Xcode
  • Storytelling
  • Presentation and pitching of ideas

Program Dates

The Apple Foundation Program at UTS runs several times a year, with classes running from 9:30am to 2:00pm. The program dates for 2025 include:


  • 6 to 24 January Wanago High School Cohort
  • 14 April to 2 May, High School Cohort
  • 19 May to 13 June, UTS Cohort
  • 7 July to 25 July, High School Cohort
  • 27 October to 14 November, UTS STARTUPS COHORT

Mentor Team

The program is led by a team of experienced mentors, including:


  • Baki Kocaballi, Director of the Apple Foundation Program and Senior Lecturer at the School of Computer Science, UTS
  • Sebastian Groundstroem, Associate Lecturer at UTS with expertise in UX design and research
  • Avinash Singh, specialist in Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology and artificial intelligence
  • Shuvam Shresha, research assistant and sessional lecturer at UTS
  • Amara Atif, teacher and educator with a philosophy of cultivating interactive learning environments
  • Firas Al-Doghman, lecturer with expertise in iOS development
  • Wesley Hahn, student and mentor with a passion for creative concepts and technology
  • Hiba Rehman, UX researcher and learning facilitator with a focus on design thinking and social change
  • Noah Koshy, alumnus of the Apple Foundation Program and current mentor with a background in IT and design
