Program Overview
The Bachelor of Communication in Journalism is designed for aspiring journalists passionate about addressing global issues and communicating them to the public. This course offers a comprehensive blend of practical skills and critical thinking, essential for framing world affairs in a clear and engaging manner. The approach at UTS champions journalism as a cornerstone of democracy, instilling in students the critical, ethical, and political acumen necessary for their future careers.
Program Structure
The program consists of 144 credit points, comprising 18 credit points of Communication Core subjects, a 48-credit-point Journalism Stream, a potential 48-credit-point Second Stream, and 30 credit points of Electives. Students are required to select their second stream when they enroll for their first year and must complete the first two subjects from this stream during their first year of study.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:
- Apply theoretically informed understandings of communication industries to independent and collaborative projects across a range of media.
- Act as reflexive critical thinkers and innovative communication practitioners who can thoughtfully evaluate and analyze their own and others' work.
- Demonstrate a strong awareness, knowledge of, and sensitivity to diversity and equity in global contexts.
- Apply knowledge and skills related to Indigenous Australian contexts to inform capabilities to work for and with Indigenous Australians within communication industries.
- Reflect upon and act ethically in the personal, political, and professional contexts of civil society.
- Listen actively and communicate clearly and appropriately in diverse communication industry contexts utilizing a range of media and modes for different audiences.
Professional Recognition
Graduates are eligible to apply for professional level membership of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA). Students are eligible for student membership of the MEAA and access to the MEAA, Women in Media, and Walkley Foundation network, which provides skill development programs.
