Program Overview

PhD Opportunity in Passive Noise Control of Underwater Structures

Introduction

A PhD scholarship opportunity is available with the Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration, University of Technology Sydney, and Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon. The scholarship duration is 3-3.5 years, and it is open to both domestic and international students.

About the Opportunity

The PhD opportunity is funded by COFUND, Marie Skodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), Horizon Europe, European Union, Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA-L), and University of Technology Sydney (UTS). The PhD awarding institutions are Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA-L) and University of Technology Sydney (UTS).

Project Opportunities

There are three project opportunities available, with funding to be awarded to one only. The projects are:

  • Acoustic Metamaterials for Flow-Induced Noise Mitigation: This project aims to investigate the radiation of sound from viscoelastic coatings excited by a turbulent boundary layer to improve our understanding of the interaction between turbulent boundary layers and acoustically coated structures.
  • Control of the Noise Radiated from Stiffened Cylindrical Shells using Acoustic Black Hole and Locally Resonant Metamaterial: This project proposes to study two innovative means to reduce the noise radiated by stiffened cylindrical shells: embedding acoustic black holes in the internal frames and attaching locally resonant metamaterials to the internal frames.
  • Extension of a Substructuring Method to Predict the Vibroacoustic Behaviour of Submerged Structures in Presence of Uncertainties: This project aims to extend the formalism of the existing CTF method to include uncertain subsystems described by statistic parameters.

Research Fields

The research fields for these projects include:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Vibrations
  • Acoustics
  • Numerical and analytical modelling
  • Experimental analysis

PhD Research Opportunities

The Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration offers various PhD research opportunities, including:

  • PhD opportunity in passive noise control of underwater structures
  • PhD Scholarship Opportunities in Nanometrology and Microelectromechanical Systems
  • PhD Scholarship Opportunities in sound field control
  • PhD scholarship opportunity in digital-twin driven prognostics for the mining industry

Work with CAAV
