Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine Professional)
Program Overview
Introduction to the Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine Professional)
The Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine Professional) is a program designed to connect students with advanced technical skills development and extensive industry experience in medical laboratory environments. This course is a fourth-year add-on to the Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathology) and is only available through a competitive application process to students who complete the pathology program.
Overview
The Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine Professional) leverages passion for medical science into a lab-based career. Graduates emerge as experts in diagnostic methods for different diseases, as well as in the workflow, regulations, and health and safety requirements of professional pathology environments.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:
- Explain how diseases arise and disrupt normal physiological function and appraise the technologies used to diagnose, treat, and cure diseases.
- Collect, accurately record, interpret, and draw conclusions from data to solve real-world medical laboratory science problems, and infer how the results of medical research can be translated to pathology professional practice.
- Evaluate ethical, social, and cultural issues in laboratory medical science in local and global contexts and work responsibly, safely, and with respect to diversity and regulatory frameworks.
- Reflect upon, independently evaluate, and critically appraise current evidence-based literature to identify medical science problems or unmet medical needs and creatively translate medical research results to improve the professional practice in pathology.
- Effectively communicate medical laboratory science knowledge and research information, and the importance thereof, to a range of audiences using a variety of modes, independently and collaboratively.
- Develop and apply knowledge of Indigenous Australian contexts to inform professional capability to work effectively with and for Indigenous Australians within the medical science contexts.
Structure
The course requires students to complete the course requirements of the Bachelor of Medical Science major in Pathology to be eligible. In the Laboratory Medicine Professional program, students must complete an additional 48 credit points, made up of 24 credit points of core subjects and 24 credit points of professional placement.
Structure Details
- Scientist's Tool Kit: 48 credit points, completing the Scientist's Tool Kit (Life Sciences) stream.
- Major (Pathology): 72 credit points, completing the Pathology major.
- Laboratory Medicine: 48 credit points, completing specific subjects including Human Pathophysiology, Applied Pathology Technology, Molecular Pathology, Laboratory Management and Quality Control, and Laboratory Medicine Professional Placement.
- Electives: 24 credit points, selecting from various UTS undergraduate subjects or Transdisciplinary Electives.
