Projects and Research
Students engage in various projects, including:
- Studio Work
- Thesis Projects
- Faculty Work These projects allow students to explore design issues, site, landscape, and ecology, and to develop their skills in a specific social, cultural, and environmental context.
Specific Course: Principles of Architecture IV
One of the courses offered is Principles of Architecture IV (ARCH 202), which is a second-year architecture studio. In this studio, students designed an oyster "aqua-cultural" center on Galveston Island's West Bay, combining an oyster farm with a cultural and education center. This project allowed students to engage with issues of site, landscape, and ecology, and to explore how to design within a specific social, cultural, and environmental context.
Research Areas
The school's research areas include oyster aquaculture, which is a relatively new frontier for Texas, having only been legalized in 2019. This area of research is becoming increasingly critical as wild oyster habitats are vulnerable to overfishing, flooding, drought, and other human and environmental impacts.
