Certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing - History

The Certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing - History is a graduate certificate program designed to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach dual credit courses in history.


Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the certificate, students will be able to:


  1. Demonstrate mastery of scholarship in History.

Requirements

The certificate requires:


  • A minimum of 6 courses (18 credit hours) of graduate-level study.
  • All course requirements must be met with Rice University coursework (transfer credit not permitted).
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.67 or higher in all Rice coursework.
  • A minimum program GPA of 3.00 or higher in all Rice coursework that satisfies requirements for the graduate certificate with a minimum grade of B- (2.67 grade points) in each course.

Policies

Admission

Admission to the Certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing program is open to currently admitted Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) students. For admission as a standalone graduate certificate, qualified applicants holding a master's degree from an accredited university or college may apply.


Admission Requirements and Process

  • Official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.00 from the applicant's undergraduate work is required.
  • Completed Application for Admission.
  • $85 Application fee.
  • Active State of Texas Standard Secondary Teaching Certificate in English or History/Social Studies.
  • Current resume.
  • Personal statement outlining academic and/or professional objectives.
  • Writing sample that demonstrates the applicant's ability to think and write critically.
  • Two letters of recommendation, each accompanied by a completed Letter of Recommendation form.
  • Application interview.

Admission Requirements - Teacher Applicants

Teacher applicants must:


  • Hold an active State of Texas Standard Secondary Teaching Certificate in English or History/Social Studies.
  • Meet federally mandated No Child Left Behind (NCLB) "Highly Qualified" status by holding at least 24 credit hours of college-level coursework in the subject to be taught.

Transfer Credit

Transfer credit coursework cannot be applied or used to meet any of the program's course requirements.


Opportunities

Association of Graduate Liberal Studies National Honor Society

Certificate students who are concurrently pursuing the Master of Liberal Studies degree may be eligible for induction into the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies National Honor Society.


Stackable Certificate Option for Rice Graduate Certificate Students

In certain situations, Rice graduate certificate students may use the credits earned toward that standalone graduate certificate credential toward a specific Rice graduate degree. The Certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing - History is stackable toward the Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) degree.
