Certificate in Engineering Project Management
The Certificate in Engineering Project Management is a graduate certificate program designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead and manage engineering teams, evaluate the economic viability of technology products and ideas, and apply key principles of engineering entrepreneurship.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the certificate, students will be able to:
- Lead and manage engineering teams, excel at hybrid communications, manage projects, lead engineering teams, and inspire people.
- Evaluate the economic viability of technology products and ideas, and apply key principles of engineering entrepreneurship to determine if a technical product or idea is valuable and economically viable.
Requirements for the Certificate
The certificate requires:
- A minimum of 4 courses (10-12 credit hours) of graduate-level study.
- A minimum of 9 graduate semester credit hours must be taken in standard or traditional courses.
- An internship practicum (RCEL 541) or a fourth course (certificate elective) worth 3 graduate semester credit hours.
- All course requirements must be met with Rice University coursework (transfer credit not permitted).
- A minimum overall GPA of 2.67 or higher in all Rice coursework.
- A minimum program GPA of 3.00 or higher in all Rice coursework that satisfies requirements for the graduate certificate.

- Core Requirements:
- RCEL 501: Engineering Management & Leadership Theory and Application (3 credit hours)
- RCEL 502: Engineering Project Management (3 credit hours)
- RCEL 505: Engineering Economics for Engineering Leaders (3 credit hours)
- Internship Practicum:
- RCEL 541: Internship Practicum for Engineering Leaders (1 credit hour)
- Certificate Elective:
- A standard or traditional course (with a course type of lecture, seminar, laboratory, lecture/laboratory) from the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing.
Policies for the Certificate
The General Announcements (GA) is the official Rice curriculum. The Rice Center for Engineering Leadership (RCEL) publishes a graduate program handbook, which can be found on their website.
Admission
Admission to the Certificate in Engineering Management and Leadership (CEML) is open to:
- Current degree-seeking Rice graduate engineering students (no formal application required).
- Non-degree-seeking students (admission to graduate study in CEML is open to qualified students holding a BS or a BA degree in a quantitative field from an accredited institution).
Application Requirements
Applications for the CEML program are due by October 30 for spring admission and April 30 for fall admission. Candidates must submit:
- Transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate schools attended.
- A Statement of Purpose.
- At least two letters of recommendation.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (optional).
- TOEFL/IELTS scores (required for international students).
- CV/Resume.
- Application fee of $85.
Financial Aid
No financial aid is available from Rice University for students in the CEML program.

Opportunities for the Certificate
The Certificate in Engineering Project Management is a stackable certificate option for Rice graduate certificate students. Students may use the credits earned toward the standalone graduate certificate credential toward a specific Rice graduate degree, unless specifically prohibited by the General Announcements.
