MS in Computational Data Science
Program Overview
Data Science Program
The Data Science program at the University of California, Riverside, offers a comprehensive education in data science, with a focus on computational methods and statistical analysis.
MS in Computational Data Science
The Master of Science in Computational Data Science program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in programming, software engineering, algorithms, and statistics. The program requires applicants to have completed a Bachelor's degree or its approved equivalent from an accredited institution, with an undergraduate record that satisfies the standards established by the Graduate Division and University Graduate Council.
Admission Criteria
All applicants to the MS in Computational Data Science program must have experience in:
- Programming
- Software engineering
- Algorithms
- Background in statistics
Competence in these areas is defined by the following undergraduate courses or equivalents:
- CS 141 - Intermediate Data Structures and Algorithms
- CS 100 - Software Construction
- MATH 010A - Multivariable Calculus
- MATH 031 - Linear Algebra
- A course covering foundations of probability and statistics (such as STAT 155 - Probability and Statistics for Science and Engineering, or EE 114 - Probability, Random Variables, and Random Processes in Electrical and Computer Engineering)
Applicants may be admitted with course deficiencies, provided they take remedial steps to cover the deficiencies. All such remedial work cannot be counted towards the MS degree requirements and should be completed within the first year of graduate study.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:
- Scores from the Graduate Record Exam, General Test (GRE)
- Scores from the TEST of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), unless they have a degree from an institution where English is the exclusive language of instruction
- Letters of recommendation, as per the admission requirements
Data Science Major
The Data Science Major is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in data science, with a focus on computational methods and statistical analysis.
Data Science Minor
The Data Science Minor is available for students who want to gain a basic understanding of data science concepts and methods.
Research Opportunities
The Data Science program offers research opportunities for students to work with faculty members on various projects, including:
- Data analysis and visualization
- Machine learning and artificial intelligence
- Statistical modeling and inference
Seminars
The program also offers seminars on various topics in data science, including:
- Data science applications in industry and academia
- New developments in data science methods and tools
